Martha Frintzila, an acclaimed singer from Greece, has decided to cancel her performance in Israel. Her courage is a welcome inspiration. On 26 October, she announced on her facebook page:
Martha Frintzila / Μάρθα Φριντζήλα posts on her page:
Μάρθα Φριντζήλα δεν θα λάβει μέρος στο Oud Festival στην Ιερουσαλήμ για συνειδησιακούς και πολιτικούς λόγους.
Martha Frintzila will not take part in the Oud Festival in Jerusalem for conscientious and political reasons. Martha Frintzila / Μάρθα Φριντζήλα Η Μάρθα Φριντζήλα δεν θα λάβει μέρος στο Oud Festival στην Ιερουσαλήμ για συνειδησιακούς και πολιτικούς λόγους.
Martha joins other artists who have not only cancelled their booked performances in Israel, but have also taken the brave stand to issue a statement. Roger Waters, Brian Eno, Annie Lennox, Gil Scott-Heron, Faithless, and Massive Attack have all come out in support of justice for Palestinians. The trend towards artists supporting human rights for Palestinians is also reflected in supportive by Gilled Vigneault, Gorrillaz, The Pixies, Lhasa, Vanessa Paradis. Natacha Altas recently issued a statement on her facebook in support of the boycott. Recent cancellations by such groups as the Yardbirds, Zdob si Zdub, and August Burns Red also show that the wave of justice is spreading, regardless if these groups decided to issue statements of support for Palestine, they spoke loudly when they simply refrained from playing in Israel, cancelling their planned gigs.
An appeal was made by Israeli citizens asking artists to refrain from participating in the Israeli International Oud Festival, which runs from 19 October to 19 November. Countless other Greek humanitarians and volunteers asked her to cancel.
A facebook page was formed titled “Please Don’t Play at the Apartheid Oud Festival.” The page states:
The organisers of the Israeli International Oud Festival are Confederation House, with the patronage of the Israeli Minister of Culture and the Israeli Municipality of Occupied Jerusalem, among other organisations all of which have colluded in Israeli violations of international law and human rights. This is a Zionist festival of the first order, with the emphasis on ‘cultural colonialism’ as described by the late, great Edward Said when he referred to the theft and appropriation of Palestinian cultural inheritance, as well as Palestinian land and history.
Israel commits crime of apartheid: "Inhumane acts of a character similar to other crimes against humanity "committed in the context of an institutionalized regime of systematic oppression and domination by one racial group over any other racial group or groups and committed with the intention of maintaining that regime."
