Katerina Papadopoulou and Sabahat Akkiraz, don’t ignore the Palestinian call for the Boycott of Israel

Turkish singer Sabahat Akkiraz performing folk and Sufi music (here in a Palestinian keffiyeh) is being asked to cancel her gig in apartheid Israel.

Calling it “Tourist tip #358 / International Oud Festival 2013” the Israeli English language paper “Haaretz,” ignores the historical reality of the Oud.  This musical instrument is part of Palestinian culture and often played by Palestinian people on the land that Israel illegally occupies.  Instead, Haaretz claims “The oud goes back into the dim reaches of history.”

Then, the article appropriates the music of two Greek and Turkish artists, in order to normalize Israeli apartheid, colonialism, and racial segregation.

This year features two Israeli premieres, as the festival programs tells us, the Katerina Papadopoulou Ensemble with traditional Greek music, and the popular Turkish singer Sabahat Akkiraz performing Turkish folk and Sufi music. The festival also features the Israeli artists Yair Dalal, Amos Hoffman, Haya Samir and others. – Haaretz
